I was born almost in the exact centre of England and as a direct result of that peculiar injustice
I now live no more than 300 metres from the sea.
I have wanted to be an author since I realised that an actual person wrote The BFG and that was an
actual job that people could do.
It took me a long time to get to the point of having a novel published. I eventually found my way by
doing the MA in Creative Writing at Birkbeck, while also hanging out at The Poetry School. And working
unglamorously hard.
The publishing industry has changed so much since the BFG came out, and the pace of that change has
sped up in the last few years. I now try to work as independently as possible so I can do what I want
in the hope that want makes me happy will resonate with other people too.
